Procter & Gamble is recalling more than 8.2 million bags of detergent

On April 5, Procter & Gamble announced a recall of 8.2 million bags of defective detergent in the United States and Canada. The recall covers a number of products manufactured between September 2023 and February 2024 under the Tide, Gain, Ace and Ariel brands.

According to a notice issued by P&G and product safety regulators in the United States and Canada, the recall is due to a problem with the child-safe packaging of the detergent. According to P&G, the outer packaging of these products can split near the zipper track, and if the contents of the detergent pack are ingested, they may cause serious injury to children and other vulnerable groups, as well as possible skin or eye damage. A large intake of any household cleaning product containing surfactants can lead to death in people with underlying health problems. P&g will refund and replace the packaging of the affected products.

For consumers who have purchased the recalled products, P&G is asking them to place the products out of reach and sight of children and to contact P&G's Cincinnati headquarters for a full refund and replacement of the child-safe bags used to store the detergent.

Studies have shown that ingesting chemicals in detergents can cause serious health hazards, including vomiting, diarrhea, liver and kidney damage, and can even be fatal.
